Helping You Move Beyond Chronic Pain
Hi. My name is Paul Seymour (he/him). I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC #16595) based in Vancouver, BC. While navigating my own chronic pain experience following a varsity soccer career, I found significant solace, relief, and energy in learning about the mind-body connection and the nervous system. Engaging in counselling and reframing my understanding of pain through education and management of my thoughts, emotions, and behaviors helped me to recover from chronic pain and move freely. Learning to look at my pain through a biopsychosocial framework represented a profound change in my experience and fueled my passion and conviction to work as a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and chronic pain specialist. Over the past 12 years, I have focused my career on helping people manage chronic pain, life transitions, trauma, career choices, relationship issues, substance use disorders, and other mental health concerns including depression, anxiety, and stress.
During my studies in Counselling Psychology (M.Ed.) at the University of British Columbia, I completed a Certificate in Pain Management through the University of Alberta’s faculty of Rehabilitative Medicine in order to further my passion and focus on pain and healing. In addition to my M.Ed., I hold a B.A. in Anthropology and a Diploma in Education and Guidance Studies from UBC and have gained professional training in the following areas: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Prolonged Exposure for trauma and PTSD (PE), and Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT). I am also designated as a Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) through the National Academy of Sport Medicine (NASM). Outside of my private practice I work as part of an interdisciplinary pain team helping individuals experiencing injury, chronic pain, substance use, and trauma.
I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) # 16595 in good standing with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC), and a Diplomate Member of the Canadian Academy of Pain Management (CAPM).
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and reading as often and as widely as possible. I love jazz, playing and teaching the drum set, and spending time at the ocean when possible. I have transitioned my love of playing soccer to finding creative ways to stay active and healthy, which now includes strength training and rolling around with my two children.
